Signs of Mailbox Crimes (Too Close to Home)
The mailboxes at our apartment complex have been broken into many times in the past 3-4 months. About two weeks ago, there were several new signs. Most unwelcome ones, it turns out.
One had a photo of the thief and asked you to contact the police if you could help identify the guy (or his car).
The other sign explained how the post office could no longer deliver to two-thirds of the boxes, including mine. So, now I can't get my mail because some asshole had been stealing things from all of us. Lovely.
But there was a tactical issue here. How can I get to the post office that's only open monday to friday 8:30am-5pm, when I work 9-5 more than half an hour away? I now have to go to work late, or leave early, just to get my mail? That's crazy. I wish people would stop and think about the damage they are doing before they break laws ... however unimportant those laws may seem at the time.
I did finally get to the PO at 4pm last thursday, only because I had to take the day off because it was day three of a four-day migraine and my eyes so much I couldn't drive that morning. By four, I could see again, and headed over to the post office. By the time I got to the counter and tried to explain, the clerk said, "Oh, we started deliveries to that address again today."
When I got home, yeah, my mail was in the box, and there was a package at the door with 10 more copies of my latest book of short stories, like nothing had ever happened.
The thief is probably going to keep doing this, if not to us, than to other people. So many thieves might never have been caught had they not tried just one more hit. Please let this guy overextend himself and face the music soon.
There was a reddit thread that went nowhere.
There is a couple who is currently in custody for mailbox thefts all over San Diego County, but our apartments are not on the list of places they hit. I could not find photos of them, but I'm sure they weren't the only people in town running a crime spree like this.
Such a nice world we're living in.
